We get into GarciaLive Vol. 18 - the latest release from the Garcia Vault. A live archival release featuring the full, two-set Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders November 2nd, 1974 Keystone Berkeley concert.

The latest Grateful Dead vault release is Volume 42 - a Winterland show from 1974.

Mojo Magazine's new issue comes with a Grateful Dead CD! Mojo is a popular music magazine published monthly in the United Kingdom and many US newsstands carry the latest issues. The album: "Mojo Presents Grateful Dead: From The Bay To The Pool (Live 1971-1978)" is available with the June 2022 issue. We get into the CD!

We talk with author, John Kilbride, who just wrote "The Golden Road: The Recorded History of the Grateful Dead." The book follows the history of the band with their official releases. With a reputation built on the band's stellar live performances, it was only in their later years and after the death of their iconic frontman Jerry Garcia, that they began the release of over 100 recordings from their vaults that documented the magic they produced on stage. This book charts the history of the band through these hundreds of releases, as well as their studio recordings and their key solo albums, that show what made this pioneering band unique.

He traveled with the band on several tours, innovating concert sound by placing the PA system behind the band — this approach evolved into the Wall of Sound.
The PA system had McIntosh power amps pushing 125,000 watts through 450 drivers. It was the largest sound system at the time – about three stories high, and was noted for its engineering breakthroughs that promised to project an acceptable quality of sound for more than 400 meters.Turner said he walked a mile away from the Wall of Sound and the sound remained perfect. “People, to this day, will say it’s the best live sound they’ve ever heard.”

Premiere Guitar magazine dubbed him as “the father of boutique guitar building.” His designs often blurred the distinction between guitar making and art. Jerry's Pretzel Guitar was one such design, and was exhibited in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and New York City’s Museum of Art and Design. Rick Turner worked with Fleetwood Mac's bassist John McVie, which led to the work with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. Turner would often serve as Buckingham’s guitar tech during the band’s Rumours sessions.

In 1978, Turner began work on the Model 1 – an instrument that has become trademark with Buckingham and his unique fingerpicking style of playing. After appraising the initial plans, Buckingham registered his interest to buy the first one off the line, and a year later had one in his possession. If Buckingham’s new guitar didn’t exactly make Turner a household name like Gibson or Fender, it certainly piqued the interest of guitarists around the world, and Turner’s shop was off and strumming.

In 1988 he served as President of Gibson Guitars Labs’ West Coast Research and Development division.

Turner has worked with Jackson Browne, David Crosby, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, and John Mayer.

Rick Turner joined the Great Jam In The Sky at the age of 78 on April 17th

We get into a show which has been recently released - Baltimore '77.

Photographer / author, Lisa S. Johnson, has a new book: "Immortal Axes." Armed with a macro lens, an incredible eye for detail, and a truly inspiring vision, Johnson takes the world of fine art photography on a rock and roll joyride. Each intimate photograph is accompanied by a touch of musical history, an anecdote or personal storytelling moment.

We talk with Eric Mlyn at Duke University about the school's new course: “Long Strange Trips: The Grateful Dead and American Cultural Change.”

Happy Lunar New Year! About a quarter of the world, including much of East Asia, is celebrating Lunar New Year, and the beginning of the Year of the Tiger. From '79 to '89, Jerry Garcia's main axe was named Tiger. We hear some Tiger driven guitar tracks!

Below is the Mission statement of Here and Again Inc.

Here and Again Inc 501 C 3 Non-Profit Mission Statement:

To lift people up and enrich their lives through the arts while providing affordable, educational, and recreational activities in a safe clean and inviting environment for people of all ages and groups through sound business and management practices. Dedicated to the preservation of historic theatres and like properties in downtown locations within the Midwest which have the potential to create an economic anchor for their community. Creating new economic and employment opportunities through education in film, media, theatre production, radio, and the fine arts.

The business plan for the Majestic Theatre calls for working with Here and Again Inc., an organization dedicated to promoting the arts and entertainment industry to educate and create employment in the entertainment field. Summer House Entertainment Inc. will attract clients from a 50+ mile radius of the venue hosting live National Acts opened by local artists who perform in a Here and Again Inc program called Song + Story. We will also be able to host film festivals and local events as well as first run movies.

The National acts and events that play the theaters are an economic boom to the communities. Patrons who attend events will often spend the night (or two) at local hotels, buy gas, and eat in restaurants.

Raising the quality of life with a vibrant theater attracts employers who want their employees to be happy in the communities in which they live. This is classic economic development. A theatre is an anchor for downtown development.

Mixing Song + Story participants with National Entertainers gives local up and coming talent the opportunity to network with entertainers who have been successful, giving them more opportunity for success in the entertainment industry.

WRWO 94.5 FM (Low Power) Ottawa Community Radio Continues to improve and support the community with good information. We would be able to do interviews with National Artists when the Majestic Theatre is able to open.

Duke University offered a Grateful Dead course and the school is currently showcasing a "Dead and Duke" exhibit. "Long, Strange Trips: The Grateful Dead & American Cultural Change" was a multidimensional and interdisciplinary examination of how ideas form, inspire, intimidate, and ultimately stand the test of time. The course explored the significance of how ideas can go from the margins to the mainstream through notions of authenticity and cooptation. We talk with the professor of the class.

I have told this story before. It was told to me every Christmas Eve for as long as I can remember. I hesitated in telling it again this year. Dad has been gone since 2001. Since I lived with it every year of my life, so must you. I carry the torch.

The 82ND Airborne had hastily been sent into battle without winter clothing and without being resupplied. Most had been on leave after Operation Market-Garden. My Dad recounted riding into battle on the back of a truck filled with gas cans for Patton’s tanks covered with blankets. They picked up ammunition from retreating troops on their way in.

Whenever the weather turned cold and snowy here in Illinois, Dad would comment about how someone was suffering from the cold. I knew he was remembering those he had lost during the war. He once told me that while heading to the front with a message, he had come across a soldier dead frozen over a machine gun, and he wished that he were him. He said “His troubles were over. Mine were still ahead of me”.

77 Years ago, on Christmas Eve, in the Ardennes Forest of Belgium, My Dad, Bob Dumke was serving with the 82Nd Airborne, 2Nd Battalion 505 Head Quarters Company. Dad was a runner who went from Battalion Headquarters carrying messages to men, his friends, on the front line. He was in the Ardennes Forest near the three river bridges at Trois – Ponts in Belgium.

My Parents business was Dumke’s greenhouse and flower shop in Ottawa, Illinois. Dad made grave blankets that he delivered to the cemetery (he made sure there were grave blankets on some young men from our community killed during Vietnam). Mom would make the most beautiful wreaths and roping. By Christmas, they were often tired and pretty worn out. We didn’t have material things living in three rooms behind the greenhouse. There was much love and many visitors. Our door was always open to friends. We often added a plate for a visitor at the dinner table.

Our family celebrated on Christmas Eve. Dad would fondly talk about his Mother Emma, a Swedish immigrant to the USA. How, when he was a child, they would decorate the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve with candles. How beautiful it would be. He had a deep love for his mother, who was gentle and kind. She had passed away when he was just 16 from Tuberculosis.

We put up our tree on Christmas Eve. Our tree had the big multi-color bulbs. As we celebrated, Dad would get quiet. You could tell, his thoughts would be someplace else. He would pull me up on his lap and whisper in my ear. His big rough hands would pat my legs, full of gentle kindness. He would tell me how, during the Battle of the Bulge in WWII, he along with Battalion Headquarters would be moving forward.

They had to move a family out into the cold and snow on Christmas Eve. There was a mother, father, and two small children. 82ND Battalion Headquarters would use their home. The home would be near the front line of battle soon. It would not be safe. They had to leave their home with only what they could carry on Christmas Eve, out into the snow and bitter cold. Dad’s voice would crack, with a lump in his throat. His eyes would well up, and he could hardly get the words out. Tears would stream down his face. I can still feel his pain. Every Christmas Eve, for as long as I can remember, he mourned for that family who was displaced by war on Christmas Eve during the Battle of the Bulge in the deep cold Ardennes winter.

Dad had gone to the front, sent guys out on patrol, crawled into a Fox hole to sleep while they were out. The guys threw their blankets and tree branches over him. A phosphorus grenade hit, and he threw the blanket and tree branches off (which he said saved his life) his arms and face were burned, and he was evacuated from the battle.

He rejoined his unit and was with them when they liberated Wobblin Concentration Camp in Ludwigslust, Germany. He told me he saw men alive, and dead stacked like cord wood for as far as the eye could see. Never take freedom for granted.

The past year (or two) have been difficult with Covid as our enemy and deep divisions among people and their political views. I remind you we have more in common then not. If we take time to let compassion into our hearts and heads the world will be a better place. Talking to each other and finding our common ground beats doing battle.

I am grateful to be a “descendant of Airborne nobility” per remarks made to me by General John Vines a few years ago.

We will soon gather as best we can with our loved ones. May we remember our soldiers who are away from home, some in harm’s way

Please be safe and hold the memory of our Paratroopers close. Let not what they fought for be in vain.

Join me and pray that there be peace and love on earth and joy in all our hearts.

Merry Christmas,

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS EXTENSION – Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall, Putnam Unit

We Want You to Join 4-H!

University of Illinois Extension- Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall & Putnam Counties invites you to join 4-H. We are always recruiting new and interested youth and volunteers. We have a variety of opportunities that we hope will fit your interests and needs.

What is 4-H? Illinois 4-H is the flagship youth development program of University of Illinois Extension and administered through the College of Agriculture, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences. 4-H grows true leaders, youth who are empowered for life today and prepared for a career tomorrow. The hands-on approach in 4-H gives young people guidance, tools, and encouragement, and then puts them in the driver’s seat to make great things happen. 4-H is a national youth development program that also operates globally in other countries. 4-H is fun and teaches youth skills for life.

Why should youth join 4-H? The Extension 4-H Youth Development Program offers a variety of opportunities in the areas of energy, natural resources, environmental relationships, foods, economics, college and career readiness, health, STEM, community involvement, and leadership for youth ages 5-18. Our programs provide hands-on, fun experiences where youth can imagine and build things, create art, do crafts, explore careers, make new friends, help others, and develop leadership skills. Independent research confirms the unparalleled impact of the 4-H experience, demonstrating that young people are four times more likely to contribute to their communities; two times more likely to make healthier choices; two times more likely to be civically active; and two times more likely to participate in STEM programs.

Why should adults become 4-H volunteers? Adult volunteers teach and inspire kids in ways that last a lifetime. They share special skills, fun hobbies, and unique interests along with a desire to share their experiences with others. We look forward to learning about your skills and interests so we can welcome you to join us as a screened volunteer leader and become an inspiration to youth!

Are there benefits to volunteering? In a survey conducted on 4-H volunteers, 80% said they felt more confident, 93% said that volunteering with 4-H helped them make their communities stronger, 84% said they made connections in the community on behalf of 4-H, and 74% said they helped recruit additional volunteers and youth. Volunteering with 4-H not only helps the individual, but also the community.

Is volunteering in 4-H flexible? Yes! You may commit to a one-day workshop or a multi-session Special Interest Club (SPIN Club). If you know five interested youth in your community, you can start a new community club. The 4-H fairs and shows always need knowledgeable volunteers to be judges and superintendents for a day. Our clubs enjoy taking their youth on field trips and having guest speakers. Volunteering for 4-H can accommodate all schedules and levels of commitment.

Current 4-H volunteer openings include: a community club leader in Ohio, Horsebowl & Hippology leader (in all counties), a Bass Fishing SPIN Club leader (in all counties), an eSports team leader (in all counties), a community club leader in DePue, certified dog trainers to conduct workshops (in Bureau, Marshall & Putnam counties), and a SPIN Club leader in Utica. If you, or someone you know, would like to fill one of these openings, or if you know of a need in your community and it is not listed, please contact us.

Is volunteering in 4-H simple? Yes! Once a volunteer completes the survey volunteer application and passes their background check, we offer training in a variety of topics to help you understand youth and our programs. We assist you in planning and implementing all events. We provide necessary materials to conduct all programs. We strive to fully support you in your volunteer role.

Is 4-H fun? Yes, it is fun for both youth and adult volunteers; join us today to find out! For more information or questions, contact Beth Dellatori, Youth Development Educator with University of Illinois Extension, at 815-224-0889 or by email at beth5@illinois.edu

Dell Furano, concert merch pioneer, joins the great jam in the sky at the age of 71. Furano got his start with rock promoter Bill Graham and later co-founded Winterland Productions. His companies made hundreds of deals, from T-shirts and hoodies to Madonna's skincare products, Celine Dion's handbags and Kiss' wafflemakers. Furano got his first gig under the recommendation of the Grateful Dead.
“Additional Bird Tests Positive for West Nile virus”

Ottawa, IL – The LaSalle County Health Department received confirmation that a crow from Streator

tested positive for West Nile virus. The bird was collected and tested on August 27, 2021.

Environmental Health staff was able to conduct the confirmatory test on the bird at the Health

Department. To date, the following West Nile virus activity has been documented for 2021:

Municipality

Date Collected

Animal/Insect

OTTAWA

08/25/2021

MOSQUITOES

UTICA

08/26/2021

CROW

STREATOR

08/27/2021

CROW

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a Culex pipiens mosquito, commonly called a

house mosquito, which has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. Common symptoms include

fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks. However,

four out of five people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms. In rare cases, severe

illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur. People older than 60 and individuals

with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.

According to Chris Pozzi, Director of Environmental Health, “The number of positive test results this week indicate that the amount of virus circulating has increased considerably. In addition, the hot, dry conditions will enable the virus to continue to thrive. We are entering the peak risk period for West Nile infections and that risk won’t subside until later in the fall when we begin to experience cooler weather. I encourage everyone to check the area around their homes and empty any containers that may be holding water from the rain we received this week and to wear their insect repellent when enjoying time outdoors.”

Monitoring for West Nile virus includes laboratory tests for mosquito batches, dead crows, blue

jays, and robins, as well as testing humans with West Nile virus-like symptoms. People who observe a sick

or dying crow, blue jay, or robin should contact the health department, which will determine if the bird

will be picked up for testing.

There are some simple precautions you can take to Fight the Bite. Precautions include

practicing the three “R’s” – reduce, repel and report.

REDUCE - make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings. Try to keep doors and windows shut. Eliminate, or refresh each week, all sources of standing water where mosquitoes can breed, including water in bird baths, ponds, flowerpots, wading pools, old tires, and any other containers.
REPEL - when outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long pants and a light colored, long-sleeved shirt, and apply an EPA-registered insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535, according to label instructions. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants.
REPORT – report locations where you see water sitting stagnant for more than a week such as roadside ditches, flooded yards, and similar locations that may produce mosquitoes. The local health department or city government may be able to add larvicide to the water, which will kill any mosquito larvae.

A complete listing of West Nile virus statistics for LaSalle County is available on the Health Department’s web site at www.lasallecounty.org. A state-wide listing is available at the Illinois Department of Public Health’s web site at http://www.dph.illinois.gov/topics-services/diseases-and-conditions/west-nile-virus/surveillance.
WRWO 94.5 FM/LP tag:www.wrwo.org,2005:Post/67356592021-09-03T22:28:03-05:002021-09-03T22:28:03-05:00Make & Take Apple Pie Filling Class

The LaSalle County Health Department is alerting residents that as of Friday, September 3, 2021, our County-Level COVID-19 Risk Metrics has been moved back to orange. As a reminder, orange status indicates there are warning signs of increased COVID-19 risk in the county. A warning level means that a county saw increases in two or more COVID-19 risk indicators.

LaSalle County continues to experience a rise in our number of cases. In addition, within the North-Central Region (Region 2) there are 19.9% of ICU beds available, which is below the 20% target. Until LaSalle County can get a handle on the number of new cases being identified each week and slow the spread that is occurring, LaSalle County will continue to be at risk for remaining at the orange warning level.

In addition, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Data Tracker (https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#county-view), LaSalle County is currently experiencing high community transmission based on the 7-day moving average of new cases per 100,000 (212.57 per 100,000) of COVID-19 (Data as of Thursday September 2).

Effective August 30, 2021, all Illinois residents are required to wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status. Masks continue to remain a simple way that everyone can reduce transmission and keep themselves and those around them safe and healthy.

This week we pay our fare thee wells to Mr. Charlie Watts. The drummer for The Rolling Stones who joined the great jam in the sky on August 24th at the age of 80.

Drummer Bill Kruetzmann said: "Drummers are bonded together by virtue of their instrument and I am saddened that today we lost a brother. The last time I saw The Rolling Stones was in the arena in Oakland where the GratefulDead had performed many times before but being in the audience, I got to experience that show as a fan. I even paid for parking! When the Stones brought out Tom Waits to sit in on “Little Red Rooster,” one of my friends reminded me that the Grateful Dead had played that very song in that very room. Charlie had his own feel for it and I loved it. I always admired his steadfast approach, ability, and style. Rest in peace, brother."

Mickey Hart stated: "Charlie Watts was a colossus in the world of rock ‘n’ roll drumming. His hands and feet danced like Nureyev, so elegant, so graceful…the bedrock of The Rolling Stones. Don’t worry Charlie, I’m told there’s rock ‘n’ roll in heaven"

Although the two bands are legendary and have a lot in common, The Stones and The Dead are not really the best of friends. We get into their unique relationship with writer Joel Selvin.

In the 90’s The Grateful Dead were the highest-grossing American band of the decade and 2nd-highest grossing band only behind The Rolling Stones. What makes that statistic even more remarkable is Jerry Garcia died in 1995, meaning they achieved this feat in the first half of the decade.

Starting in 1970, a concert at Altamont Raceway changed the way The Stones and The Dead did business.

Beyond Description. . .

We pay our farewells to Don Everly, half of the Rock and Roll & Country Music Hall of Fame duo The Everly Brothers joined the 'great jam in the sky' at the age of 84. The duo first gained attention from Nashville musicians while still attending high school and began writing and recording their own music in 1956. The following year, “Bye Bye Love," hit No. 1 setting off a string of hits that included “Wake Up Little Susie,” “All I Have To Do Is Dream” and “Problems.” From 1957 to 1958, the duo toured with Buddy Holly. We hear that Bo Diddley Beat that Buddy Holly also made famous. In 1960, The Everly Brothers signed with Warner Bros. - the same record label that later signed The Grateful Dead - and recorded “Cathy’s Clown.” Peter Ames Carlin, author of "Sonic Boom: The Impossible Rise of Warner Bros. Records" tells us the importance of Cathy's Clown and the impact it had on the record label. Plus, Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia along with New Riders of the Purple Sage perform a cover of Cathy's Clown.
WRWO 94.5 FM/LP tag:www.wrwo.org,2005:Post/67222482021-08-20T08:04:11-05:002021-08-20T08:04:11-05:00Dead Air with Cory Daniels
Friday Aug 20, 2021
